Let’s talk about dogs and babies. Dogs are domesticated predators. Some dogs think babies are mad weird. Because let’s face it, they are! They are loud. Can come off WAY to strong. They move….oddly. Any one of these very natural baby actions can set a dog off. Just because you had a baby, doesn’t mean your dog will automatically love it. You need to put in the work to make sure that your dog understands that this weird little creature is an accepted member of the family, and you need to TEACH YOUR KID how to respect the dog. I came across this oldie but goodie of my son and my dog, the late, great, Gaston! TJ had just learned how to pull himself up into a standing position and was SO EXCITED to be able to look at Gaston, standing up. If you look at Gaston’s face, however, it tells a different story. His ears are a little perked up and his mouth is shut tight. These two body langue cues tell me that he’s not that thrilled about having TJ yell in his face, and that I need to help him out. Although he was a little uncomfortable, his body isn’t super tense and his eyes are soft, which also tell me that at the end of the day, he is coping. That is what was awesome about Gaston. He was a super patient dog with a HUGE threshold of tolerance and I could trust him. That is why he was allowed on the couch when TJ was a baby, and why Bo Diddly, for example, was not. Know what your dog can handle, and help them through their struggles. When you have a dog with behavioral issues, it can be hard to go places with them. Bo Diddly is insecure, has anxiety, and is dog selective. And now he is deaf. When I do travel with him, I go through a mental check-list to make sure that he will feel safe and secure in the location we are going to. We traveled to my friends house over the weekend, and he instantly took to my friends parents. Bo has always been fairly interested in people, but to see him and my friends Dad looking out the front door together and enjoying a quiet moment brings such a big smile to my face. This picture was taken when we had stepped out for a bit, and left Bo at the house.
